UPDATE: Attempts to Ban Lead Fishing Tackle Increase – Your Help is Needed More Than Ever

New Efforts to Ban Lead in Fishing Tackle Demonstrate the Need for a Legislative Solution

Last November, 43,000 anglers like you helped to defeat an attempt to ban lead in fishing tackle nationwide when the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) denied a petition to ban lead in fishing tackle under the Toxic Substances Control Act. Despite the EPA’s ruling, this issue is not yet fully resolved. The petitioners have filed a law suit against the EPA’s decision and submitted a similar new petition to the agency that could still result in a ban on lead fishing tackle nationwide.

KeepAmericaFishing™ is once again asking anglers to oppose this unjustified petition and to rally behind legislation that will put an end to these unwarranted attacks on recreational fishing once and for all. Read the rest of this entry »

TBF “No Entry Fee” Divisional Championship Series returns in 2012

Wisconsin Hosting Northern Division Sept 5-7 at LaCrosse

Ponca City, Okla. – Jan. 5, 2012 The Bass Federation (TBF), the national leader in NO cost or low cost tournament fees, announced today the dates and locations of seven events in the 2012 TBF “No Entry Fee” Divisional Championship Series.  The Divisional Championship Series grew to seven divisions in 2010 due to the growth of TBF and the restructure of the current TBF Western division into the Northwest and Southwest divisions.  This will continue for 2012 and cut drive time in half for our western anglers! Anti-Fishing Groups Bypass Ongoing Lawsuit in Attempt to Ban Lead Fishing Tackle

Sportfishing community calls for the dismissal of unwarranted petition for a national ban on lead fishing tackle

Alexandria, VA – December 6, 2011 – On November 16, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) was yet again petitioned by the Center for Biological Diversity and two other anti-fishing groups, requesting that the agency regulate the manufacture and sale of lead fishing tackle of certain sizes and uses under the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA). If approved, such regulation could result in a de facto ban of lead sinkers, jigs and other popular types of fishing equipment.

This comes on the heels of a similar petition that the EPA dismissed in November 2010. The original petition also sought to ban lead hunting and shooting ammunition, which is exempted from regulation under TSCA. In dismissing the original petition, the EPA indicated that the “petitioners have not demonstrated that the requested rule is necessary to protect against an unreasonable risk of injury to health or the environment, as required by the TSCA.” Read the rest of this entry »

Chelminiak, Peterson out-duel field to grab first place on Kinkaid Lake

08.Oct.2011

CARBONDALE, IL – Wisconsin State Champions Kyler Chelminiak of Whitnall High School and Nicholas Peterson of Lakeland  High School won the High School Central Regional tournament held on Kinkaid Lake Saturday. The High School team recorded three bass weighing 9 pounds, 9 ounces to beat the Indiana state championship team by 5 pounds, 12 ounces.

Chelminiak said the team used Mann’s Flippin’ Craw to catch their fish Saturday.

“I used one bait and one rod, actually it was a flipping rod, to catch all my fish,” Chelminiak said. “It was slow all day long. We only got one bite every two hours.” Read the rest of this entry »

Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker Signs Culling Bill

Wisconsin anglers now have the freedom to do something bass anglers in the rest of the country have been doing in tournaments for years: replace a bass in the live well with a larger one. The country’s last statewide bass culling ban was lifted in late May, after Gov. Scott Walker signed into law a bill that repealed the ban.

The Wisconsin Bass Federation, along with other tournament promoters and tournament anglers has been trying to overturn the culling law for more than 20 years. Wisconsin Bass Federation member Aaron David contacted friend and President Mike Simonds to consult on this topic. Mike felt Aaron’s passion on this issue and said do what you need to and the Federation would back your efforts.

“I testified three times to the Committee on Natural Resources about lifting this ban five or six years ago, but it never went anywhere,” recalls David. “The DNR just wouldn’t budge on this issue.” Read the rest of this entry »

TOTAL DOMINATION – 3 Rivers Bass Club Wins 2011 4-Man Classic

L-R Scott Alo, Ron Anderson, Chad Richardson, Phil Richardson

After dominating the Zone 4 Tournament and the State Championship, 3 Rivers Bass Club wasn’t going to stop there, they set their sights on the 4 Man Classic Team Tournament held on the Mississippi River,  Pools 6 & 7, on September 24th and 25th. Twelve clubs made their way to Winona, MN to compete for the title of 2011 4 Man Classic Team Champions.

3 Rivers Bass Club lead at the end of day one with 32.96 pounds including the day one Big Bass, a 4.25 pound largemouth. The other clubs were not going to just hand it over without a fight. After all, La Crosse Bassmasters was in second place just 2 pounds behind. There were ten team limits brought in on day one, but day one was not friendly to everyone. One boat from C & R Bass Anglers completely lost the midsection of his motor and spun out of control, making it nearly impossible to handle the mighty Mississippi River without a big motor. Another moment of excitement also came Saturday morning when the father/son team of Bill and Josh Gruber from Castle Rock Bassmasters spent several hours in the emergency room removing a hook from Josh’s neck. Thankfully, Josh and his Dad were back on the water. Also both members in the C & R boat were uninjured, but making that early ride back to Watertown. Read the rest of this entry »

Bonnema, Team Minnesota Take 2011 TBF Northern Division Trophies

Sept. 9, 2011, Brainerd, Minn. – Three days of near perfect weather plus three days of near perfect fishing makes Minnesota Federation Angler, Scott Bonnema the 2011 TBF Northern Division Overall Champion, as well as the Cabela’s Angler Cash and Ranger Cup Bonus winner. Bonnema was in the lead every day of the tournament and finishes the tournament with 45lbs even.

“Fishing today was really good first thing this morning. I caught 4 or 5 good ones, and got to take a deep breath. I was fishing in 8-10 ft of cabbage, flippin a Terminator jig with a chigger x craws, black and brown jigs with a natural color crawfish. When they grabbed on, they held on to it. I used a brand new 2012 Terminator spinner bait from terminator, ¾ oz that I fished in 8’ of water with,” said Bonnema. With nearly every angler catching 5-fish limits every day, there wasn’t a lot of differences in weights. “I stayed with a pattern, practiced hard and found the deeper fish. I managed my fish well, I would get 2-3 good fish off each spot.” Bonnema will be headed back to the TBF National Championship as a boater. Read the rest of this entry »

Bonnema Maintains Lead After Day 2 of Northern Division Championship

Sept. 8, 2011, Brainerd, MN – Day two of the 2011 TBF Northern Division Championship, presented by Cabela’s was a mirror-weather of yesterday. Nearly all competing anglers brought in limits today, and the trend will probably continue into the final day. Tomorrow wraps up the Northern Division and 12 anglers will be qualified for the 2012 TBF National Championship.

Scott Bonnema of the Minnesota Federation has maintained his lead and consistency, by bringing in 15 lbs 7 oz, just 4 oz less than yesterday’s bag. His 2-day weight is 31-2, with a good 4 lb lead on a lake with so many fish that weigh nearly the same. The big bites are hard to come by right now. “Normally this time of year we have had a good cold snap and the water temperatures are lower, making the fishing a little better. The daily weights would probably average out to about 17-18 lbs instead of the 10-12 lbs like we are seeing now. There are many 4-5 lbers out here on this lake, but they’ve got a finicky bite,” said Bonnema, who is from Zimmerman, Minn. “I’ve been throwing some topwater baits and caught a lot of mine today on jigs and tubes. I had a couple of better fish today.” Read the rest of this entry »
