Today Al Smith is BassFan's new VP of
membership groups. With the BassFan Army membership program and
the company's new relationship with The Bass Federation Inc.
(TBF), Smith will have his hands full, said BassFan's Jay Kumar.
"BassFan is a place where
angler-fans can come to have a politics-free, fun experience, and
I believe that fact and our relationship with the Bass Federation
are big reasons we're seeing our membership rolls grow so
dramatically," Kumar said. "With his experience and
vision for the future, Al is the perfect person to shepherd our
membership programs into their next phase."
Smith has successfully shepherded
other fishing membership programs, most lately as president of
Brentwood, Calif.-based U.S. Anglers Choice. There he grew
participation, started new trails and developed a national
championship for that organization's 50-plus team trails across
the country, while also being responsible for sponsorships and
other key business areas.
Prior to that he was the national
Federation director for ESPN-owned BASS for three years, a
position he took after being president of the Maine Bass
Federation, a voluntary post.
"I'm extremely excited about the
opportunity to develop the BassFan membership and the
relationships between the industry and weekend anglers,"
Smith said. "With the Skeeter
BassFan Army and the Skeeter Weekend Warrior Championship,
BassFan has provided a way for all weekend fishermen and everyone
in the fishing industry to participate.
"Companies that can't afford BASS
and FLW now can reach weekend fishermen through us, whereas before
they couldn't," he explained. "In the same way, our
programs provide a politics-free venue for weekend guys to get
national exposure and come into the industry."
He added: "I'm very excited about
working with the Federation (TBF) again, as well as everyone at
BassFan – because of the direction the company is moving in and
the things it has done. It's kind of like a mini-dream come true.
BassFan is breaking new ground all the time, and that's
exciting."
